Course #1 “Enamel Therapy: The Next Generation of Care
Presented by: Lillian Caperila, RDH, MEd
3 CEU
A changing paradigm in caries management has broadened our decision model with the inception of risk assessment tools and new product therapies. With terms such as “minimally invasive” and “remineralization technologies,” we are faced with innovations in diagnosing and treating the caries disease process. This program will review the historic and current trends in caries control and introduce the exciting new choices for treating desensitization and demineralization within our hygiene treatment plan. Products to be discussed include: desensitization agents, topical fluorides, prophy pastes and varnish therapies.
About the speaker: Lil Caperila, RDH, MEd, is approach- ing 35 years of experience in the dental field. Beginning as a certified dental assistant and actively practicing as a dental hygienist in the specialty of periodontics has given Lil extensive experience in preventive therapy. A graduate of Montgomery County Community College, Lil completed her A.S. degree and certification in dental hygiene in 1980. During her clinical years, she has achieved a B.S. in dental education and a M.Ed. degree from Penn State University in Instructional Design and Training. She is employed with Premier Dental Products and actively engages in sales management and professional education. Recently, Lil completed a three week tour of China and Japan where she presented workshops to engage her professional colleagues in instrumentation techniques and prevention therapy. Lil held leadership positions within the PDHA as President in 1999-2000 and Governmental Relations Chair for several years.

Course #2 It’s All Connected: Oral Health & Whole Body Wellness
Presented by: Patti DiGangi, RDH, BS
- 3CEU
Oral care practice has changed significantly over the past decades, and oral health professionals’ roles in patients’ overall health maintenance continue to grow in importance. The understanding of oral-systemic health links is also growing, as evidenced by scores of articles in professional journals and the public media.
Dental professionals have long been aware of some of the links between oral health and systemic health, but with the exponential growth of interest and information in this area, it can be extremely difficult to keep up with the latest literature, let alone to separate well-supported clinical evidence from unsupported hypotheses. This presentation seeks to highlight the latest information on the links between oral health and systemic health conditions. It will be used to educate general dentists, hygienists and dental assistants on these advances, as well as providing more practical information about how these emerging evidence-based connections may affect their practices.
About the speaker: Patti DiGangi, RDH, BS, is a speaker, author and still practicing dental hygiene clinician. Patti is a certified presenter through Academy of General Dentistry National Speaker’s Bureau for Periodontal Disease, a member of GC America Key Opinion Leaders, Zila Pharmaceuticals National Speaker’s Bureau, Hu-Friedy Thought Leaders Program and the Proctor & Gamble Whole Health Lecture Board. She is also a member of the Linda Miles Speaking & Consulting Network, on the Advisory Board for the National Museum of Dentistry and Director for Career Fusion. Patti’s articles appear regularly in RDH Magazine, Modern Hygienist, and other professional journals. Patti is currently co-writing a book on minimal intervention philosophy and a novel.

Course #3 WNL: Optimizing the Oral Cancer Evaluation
Presented by: Patti DiGangi, RDH, BS
- 3CEU
WNL means within normal limits - but are we sure? Oral cancer is one of the most treatable of the major cancers when discovered and treated early. Yet oral cancer (6th most common cancer in the US) is the only major cancer whose incidence is rising when all other cancers tracked by the American Cancer Society are declining. Dental professionals are uniquely positioned to screen patients and detect oral cancer in its early, treatable stage. This course provides a review of the topic and practical recommendations for screening patients in the general practice setting.
Course # 5 The Role of Dental Hygiene in a Balanced Dental Care Delivery System
Presented by: Tammi O. Byrd, RDH
- 2 CEU
The course will highlight a school-based dental hygiene prevention program including the legislative and legal arenas and how they affect change in creating increased access to dental hygiene services. We will also look at the skills needed to initiate a prevention program and outcomes that have been demonstrated through a particular program. The course will also look to the future by reviewing current health policy and statistics from the perspective of how the dental hygiene profession can and will evolve to be an integral part of the future health care delivery system.
About the speaker: Tammi O. Byrd, RDH, is the CEO/Clinical Director of a statewide school-based dental hygiene prevention program in South Carolina. Tammi’s interest in public health started when she served as Community Dental Health Chair of her local dental hygiene component in 1981. Since that time she has moved up through the ranks of the professional dental hygiene association and served as the ADHA president in 2003-2004. Upon installation as the ADHA President, she charged the Council on Education to develop a curriculum for an advanced dental hygiene practitioner. Her state legislative involvement was successful in getting the laws in South Carolina changed to allow direct access to dental hygiene services in particular settings in 2000. When state agencies declared they would not administer public health dental hygiene programs, Byrd took it upon herself to see the legislation come to fruition. She started Health Promotion Specialists and has been serving children across the state of South Carolina since the 2000-2001 school year.
**Tammi will also bring the Keynote Address, “Access to Prevention” on Saturday at 1:00pm. |
